Frequently Asked Questions

Do you shoot digital or film?
We photograph exclusively with traditional film, usually using medium format cameras for maximum quality. However, all our film is scanned, enabling us to use the wonders of digital technology in many ways, including head transplants, opening eyes, removing objects or people, changing backgrounds, color splashes.

How long do portraits take?
Great portraits don't just "happen". Our portraits are created with thought, preparation, dialogue, care, and planning. They usually take time. We've found that the old adage, "haste makes waste" often rings true.

Since children have a definate rhythm to their day, scheduling, communication and planning are essential to great results. The same care is given to events. Add to that the often unpredictable New England weather, and flexibility - both yours and ours - is something we really appreciate.

Do you work with an assistant?
Yes, almost always. A good assistant is worth his or her weight in gold.

Why do you use a medium format camera?
With a medium format camera, the negative is much bigger than a 35mm negative. The end results are clearer, crisper photographs which can be enlarged to over 20 x 24.

What about the negatives?
The negatives are owned by Natural Exposures.
Wedding and Bar/Bat Mitzvah clients may have the opportunity to purchase them 3-5 years after the event.

What if something gets lost or destroyed?
That's a good question. Fortunately, there has never been a problem but insurance covers the digital reproduction of paper proofs should the negatives get lost. In the very near future we will have a triple check system in place. This means that in addition to proofs and negatives, our lab will now provide high resolution digital storage of all photographs created. This storage capability makes the use of negatives unnecessary.

What is the turnaround time?
The turnaround time is usually about a week-10 days for children's and family portraiture proofs and for larger photographs.
For weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, proofs are ready 3-4 weeks after the event. Framing takes about 3-4 weeks.
Finished albums take about 2-4 months.

What is the purpose of a second light at weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs?
The second light is used to light the backgrounds. Otherwise, the backgrounds would usually be dark, if not completely black.

Do you bring backup equipment?
Yes, always. In the unlikely event that an unexpected problem arises, we are always prepared with additional gear.
